Dr. Charles
Eason
Science Manager, Urban Environmental Management
Landcare Research NZ Ltd.
Biography
Dr Eason has twenty years post-doctorate experience initially in
pharmaceutical drug safety evaluation and latterly in environmental
toxicology. His areas of specific expertise include: mechanistic
toxicology and toxicokinetics as applied to risk assessment and
he is an Internationally recognised expert in vertebrate pesticide
toxicology. He has been responsible for the leadership and establishment
of an extremely strong multi-disciplinary team of Environmental
Toxicologists at CENTOX, and has acted as a Consultant to private
companies, agrochemical manufactures, with regard to hazardous substances
and improved safety evaluations. In 2001, he received a New Zealand
Science and Technology Silver Medal, awarded by the Royal Society
of New Zealand to recognize his outstanding scientific and technological
research achievements.
Recent projects
include: extensive studies on the fate and effects of a cholecalciferol,
brodifacoum and 1080 when used for pest control leading to greater
than 80 papers and safer use patterns; leading the research team
which designed and co-developed (with private industry) campaign
(1995), Feratox® (1997), Feracoll® (1998), representing
a new generation of products specifically designed with low welfare
environmental and non-target impacts. He is currently leading a
major NZ FRST programme "Reducing the Exposure of Humans and
Wildlife to Contaminants". This programme is applying new integrated
approaches, biomarkers and fate studies as a basis for an improved
protection of the NZ environment, wildlife and humans from hazardous
pollutants and providing the means for regional and terrestrial
authorities to improve their guardianship of the land.
Dr Eason has
published greater than 150 science papers and book chapters ranging
from mechanistic studies characterising adverse drug reactions through
to biomarkers in wildlife to improve environmental risk assessment
of contaminant effects.
