Biography
Dr. Maria Ignatieva is Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Landscape
Architecture at the College of Environmental Science and Forestry,
State University of New York. She received her bachelor and master's
degrees from St. Petersburg Forest Technical Academy (Russia) and
her doctoral degree from Moscow State University. In 1988-1989 Maria
worked as the researcher of urban flora at the Komarov Botanic Institute
of Russian Academy of Science. From 1989 until 1995 Maria was an
Associate Professor in the Department of Landscape Architecture
and Botany at St. Petersburg Forest Technical Academy. From 1997
until 2001 Dr. Ignatieva taught in the Landscape Architecture Department
at Lincoln University (Christchurch, New Zealand).
Maria' interests
range widely, and include the urban flora and vegetation, ecological
design, planting design, history of landscape architecture and historical
parks restoration. Maria has been one of the initiators of pioneering
research on the ecology of historical parks in St. Petersburg, on
urban biotopes in Christchurch, New Zealand and recently on unification
of urban floras and searching for sustainable planting design solutions
in colonial cities. At SUNY ESF Dr. Ignatieva introduced the new
seminar "Landscape and Urban Ecology" and helped to develop
the "Urban Ecological Design Studio". Maria has published
50 scientific papers, reviews, reports and articles and the book
"Botanical Excursions around the City". She presented
33 scientific papers in Russia, Europe, USA, Australia and New Zealand.
She is the member of Editorial Board of the journal "Urban
Forestry and Urban Greening."
