Biography
Denis A Saunders is a former Chief Research Scientist with the Australian Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) and a Commissioner of the Australian Heritage Commission. He is now a Research Fellow with CSIRO Sustainable Ecosystems. He is also a Director of Earthwatch Institute Australia, on the Executive Council of WWF Australia, and on the Board of Birds Australia. He is an Associate Editor of Landscape and Urban Planning and an Editor of Biological Conservation. He is Chair of the Editorial Advisory Committee of the journal Emu and is on the editorial board of Pacific Conservation Biology.

He is a conservation biologist and landscape ecologist with research interests in the conservation of biological diversity in agricultural landscapes; the ecology, behaviour and taxonomy of black cockatoos and the effects of development on their distribution and abundance; and the ecology of islands and conservation of island bird communities. He has a strong commitment to conservation biology and to communicating landscape ecology and conservation to all members of the community

He was awarded the International Society for Conservation Biology's 1998 Individual in Government award for making "significant, meaningful and lasting contributions to conservation biology." He received the International Association for Landscape Ecology's 1999 Distinguished Scholarship Award with Professor Richard Hobbs for "exceptional contributions to the development of landscape ecology as a science and a practice." He was highly commended in the Australian Prime Minister's 2000 Environment Award for highly significant and outstanding individual contribution to the research and practice of biodiversity conservation.

He has written 2 books and more than 130 scientific papers, chapters in books, reports or other publications and edited 9 books.
